One of the GMA TV shows in the Philippines is now making waves all over the Facebook and Twitter world and is shaking the common conceptions of the Filipino audiences. It has spiked the interest of viewers by tackling a controversial yet timely topic, one that deals with homosexuality which is still not totally acceptable by many in our society.
My Husband’s Lover is a prime-time soap about the compelling love and life story of the main characters played by Carla Abellana (as Lally, the wife), Tom Rodriguez (as Vincent, the husband) and Dennis Trillo (as Eric, the husband’s lover). Each episode leaves the audience gripping their seats in anticipation of the twists and turns of the story-line.
Far from the stereotype about gays as being literally ‘gay’ in terms of character, it explores a side not seen before in Philippine television in a depth that shows it is not simply a show created for mere entertainment but rather to change the landscape of television as well as how the third sex is being perceived by society. For some, this is a case of horrors but for the enlightened viewers and members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual) community this a welcome change and one that serves to educate and show another side of what being member of the third sex is all about.
Is it daring? YES it certainly is! But the media hype is not just about the publicity or even the fact that the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) even issued a statement about it regarding its being the first gay-themed series in Philippine television. The concept and the idea is daring but the greatest thing about it is the fact it is a catalyst for societal change.
The greatest surprise is how the story-line flows and how the creative team behind the soap manages to tug at the audiences’ hearts in a myriad of ways. Each point of view is expertly presented in a very human way. One cannot help but feel sympathy for each main character’s dilemma: the wife, the husband and the husband’s lover

My Husband’s Lover is definitely not one of your run of the mill TV shows. It is live art unfolding on our TV screens. It is one that awakens the Filipino mind as well as leaves the audience rethinking their misconceptions. That is why it deserves to be called as another ground breaking program delivered by GMA not only to Filipino audience but also to foreign audiences who remains captivated by each episode.
